My Shop!
My Shop! This pictorial account is about my volunteer travel experience around the world. Overall, I have travelled to eighty three countries, territories and colonies covering six continents around the world. I have lived and practiced in nineteen countries as a pharmacist, clinical pharmacologist, lecturer and volunteer kindergarten English teacher. I am still traveling to learn more about places, peoples and different cultures.
I retired from my practice in July 2023. Initially, l was of the opinion that it would be satisfying to do nothing. Over time, l felt the need to do something purposeful with my time. The rational being to contribute to society in a way different from what l was accustomed to during nearly four decades of my career. As a bonus, this endeavor l hope would keep me active physically and mentally.
With this background, l embarked on a volunteer journey about six months after my retirement. Thus far, I have significant volunteer experience stretching from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere. From Australia and New Zealand to China, Ecuador, Sweden, Portugal, Scotland and Germany.
Throughout these geographical zones, I volunteered on the farm in Western Australia, Portugal and; in the woodlands in New Zealand. Also, I acquired experience about home improvement and repair work in Nerang, Goldcoast; in Queensland on the east coast of Australia. It is noteworthy that l volunteered in a Charity Store as well as served meals to people in need in Duisburg, Germany. I’ve also been involved in do-it-yourself work during my volunteer service in Scotland.
During my time in Portugal, l attended agricultural exhibition & InsectERA congress. This exposure gave me the opportunity to learn about bioindustrial practice and agricultural circular economy. For example, mass production of crickets [fed with not so commercially desirable vegetables and nutritional sources] for use as organic manure and food of the future. Biological wastes (frass) produced are recycled into the soil for regeneration and conservation. The cycle loop is completed with the production of agricultural products harvested with the benefit of organic manure from the mass-produced crickets. Additionally, l learned about sustainable development and hydroponic farming practices in Gothenburg, in the south west of Sweden.
Apart from my teaching experiences and responsibilities, my routines vary on a daily basis. I’ve participated in garden maintenance, tree felling, grain harvest, grain dumping into the silos, driving agricultural machinery (for planting and harvesting) on the farm range, painting sheds, fences & planks; trap setting in farm ponds and dams, preparation of sheep wool for shipment, observed sheep shearing and relocation of sheep herds from one grazing parchment to another. Additionally, l support my hosts for day-to-day farmhouse activities like cooking, washing dishes, collection of rain water and general cleaning.
Previously, I had written ten ebooks about my travels around the world. However, traveling as a professional is different from traveling as a tourist. Traveling as a volunteer is also distinct in its own right. The experience of living with locals short term contrasts with that of a resident professional. It’s fun traveling as a tourist but the depth of local experience associated with resident travel is lacking.
The pictures presented in this account combine the experiences of the three styles referenced. The distinctions among the styles are unambiguous. The magnificent pictures in the album are wide-ranging and inclusive of the travel styles highlighted in this introduction. l hope you will find the collection in this picture album interesting and useful for whatever style of travel you choose for knowing about our world. From the uniquely exquisite pictures of countryside and verdant Bothlynbank in Scotland; to the touristic city of Glasgow, you will find amazingly interesting pictures to gloss over. Additionally, the range of pictures cover intriguing and beautiful countries of Australia, New Zealand and volcano-dotted Ecuador in the Southern hemisphere. Pictures from China, Germany, Portugal and Sweden are also included.
